Money Information
The official currency of Cambodia is the Riel however US dollars are widely accepted; in fact many businesses set their prices in US dollars. It is however wise to carry some riel around with you for small purchases.
At the time of writing the exchange rate is approximately 4,000 Riel – US$ 1.00
Nearly all hotels, souvenir shops, and restaurants accept US Dollars so it is worth bringing some US currency in small denominations. Cashing travelers cheques is possible in banks and large hotels. Most large hotels in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap accept Visa and Mastercard (but not American Express).
The acceptance of credit cards is increasing in Cambodia and you can get cash advances against your credit card at some major commercial banks. There are however no ATMs that will provide access to foreign bank accounts. |
